Hi there! I’m Lisa, the Survival Mom!

I help moms learn how to prepare and equip their families for those critical moments when life hits you hard and there’s no time to figure out what to do. I give you training and resources

I’m the mom of two homeschooled kids and the wife of a very patient man!

I’m also by nature a fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants kind of person. I love spontaneity, having fun, and, “No worries!” has always been my motto! In 2009, though, the Great Recession hit my family hard, and I realized that our lifestyle was a lot more vulnerable than I realized.

Our family business came close to shutting down, and we had to cut every expense possible. When I had to cancel my son’s guitar lessons — the money just wasn’t there — it really hit home that we could lose more than just those lessons.

With just a quick look around my neighborhood I saw how those stories were affecting everyday people like me.

So many good, hardworking people lost their jobs, homes, and financial security, almost overnight.

That’s when I decided there had to be a way for a mom like me to protect her family and prepare for the unknown, whatever it might be.

I began digging around the internet for information about how I, an average suburban mom, could protect my family against the devastation of a collapsing economy. It didn’t take long before I ended up in the realm of the doomers, survivalists with tips for food storage, purifying water, and dealing with snipers!

I sorted through mountains of information, found what applied to my family, and got busy “prepping”. I had no idea what preppers were. I only knew that I could be proactive and prepare for emergencies by doing what moms have always done — taking charge and getting things done!

Quickly, my emergency food supply began to grow as I furiously clipped coupons and scoured grocery store sale ads. In a single day, I assembled a vehicle emergency kit and a few supplies to help us deal with power outages.

A part of my brain had been activated and each day I tried to find other ways to help my family prepare for everyday emergencies.

As a former teacher, corporate trainer, and writer, I decided to start a blog and write about my prepping adventures. The Survival Mom blog was born.

Within a couple of months, it was featured in a Newsweek spread. Unknowingly, I had landed right in the middle of the prepping craze, and soon became known as “Queen of the Preppers”.

Unlike most others leading the surge in prepping, though, my family didn’t have a bunker. We didn’t have drills to see how fast we could don gas masks and Tyvek suits, and we weren’t teaching our kids how to forage for edible insects. In fact, we were so much like every other family that one reporter said, “You seem so…happy and normal.”

Why, thanks! I like to think of myself as just a very smart and very aware mom who will do whatever it takes to safeguard her family.

If you’ve read my story this far, I think you’re that same kind of mom. You’d jump in front of anything to save the lives of your kids — I’m the same way.

It’s my mission to help moms like you create a safe refuge for your family with common-sense and frugal prepping.

If you’ve stumbled across The Survival Mom in your search for advice on how to store emergency food, how to get ready for a natural disaster like a tornado, or how to become more self-reliant no matter where you live, you’re in the right place!

My style is friendly, casual, and never extreme! I can save you a lot of time, money, and worry because I’m happy to share my own mistakes and successes.

Simple, everyday prepping has brought a lot of peace to me and my family. My hope is that it happens for you as well, and I’m honored to be a part of your journey.
