For a while, I thought I was living a fairytale. My family was vacationing in gorgeous Newport Beach in early December. The tidepools were filled with wondrous sea creatures, and my kids had walked down the beach with a friend. It was just me and my hubby, the Paranoid Dad, counting the waves. I heard my cell phone ring, and it was the call that may very well change my life. Gary, my book agent, was calling with the words I had been waiting to hear, “We have a publisher who wants to buy your book!”
Back in April, Gary had ‘discovered’ me and TheSurvivalMom. I felt a little like Lana Turner sitting at a soda counter in Hollywood. Gary explained that he loved my blog and thought the topic was very timely. It would make a great book, he told me. Not one to pass up an opportunity, I tackled his To Do list. I wrote three chapters and even wrote my own proposal. Both were daunting tasks, but I was determined. I thrive on ‘difficult’.
There were some ups and downs along the way, as there always are, but we persevered. Me, writing, correcting, editing, and obsessing. Gary, back in New York, lounging in his gorgeous office, gazing at the city skyline, thinking deep, literary thoughts. At least that’s how I picture him!
I’m really excited about publishing a book that will take the theme of family preparedness and put it in an organized form that is entertaining and motivating. This blog is fun and fast-moving, but some readers have asked for something more, a volume that would contain enough ‘How To’s’ to ensure their family’s preparedness for an uncertain future.
I’ve gotta be honest. As thrilled as I am and as much as I love new challenges, I’ve never written a book before. It’s a bit intimidating. I’ll be working with a terrific editor, Cindy, at Harper One, and between the two of us, I know we’ll publish something amazing.
