As a wife and mom to four awesome kids, I have been focusing my efforts at home on becoming a “prepper” and signed up to take Lisa’s food storage class at Honeyville Farms. As I was preparing for the class, it dawned on me that essential oils are perfect…no essential… for our emergency supplies. These oils will last longer than we will if they are taken care of properly, (but honestly, we put them to good use and they don’t last very long at my house!), plus we will be able to take care of the emotional and physical wellness of our families.
What is an essential oil?
Essential oils are basically concentrated liquid plant extracts. They are 50 to 70 times more powerful than herbs. (One drop of peppermint oil contains the same essence as 28 cups of peppermint tea!) They are 100% natural with little or no side effects. They have medicinal benefits; in fact, the same compounds found in the essential oils are mimicked by pharmaceutical companies. They are antibacterial and antiviral.
How do I use Essential Oils?
Essential oils can be used three ways:

Aromatically with a diffuser, which can affect mood, cleanse the air and open airways.
Topically which has systemic affects, massage, offers instant comfort and immune support.
Internally to help the digestive system, mouth, throat, liver and the urogenital tract.
My personal experience with these oils
Melaleuca: (cleansing and regenerative properties, especially for the skin)
We have used this to heal a canker sore, severe rash, chronic athlete’s foot, and welted bug bites.
Breathe: (respiratory issues…think cold and flu season!)
My baby had a cold tonight, and I rubbed Breathe on the bottoms of his feet. Within 15 minutes he was back to sleep.
I place a few drops in the bath or rub it on the bottom of my children’s feet in the evening to calm them and they love it. I diffuse it in the car before I pick my kids up from school to calm them. We rub a drop on bug bites to calm the itch.
Peppermint: (use to ease breathing and as a digestive aid)
This is my personal favorite. I use it to wake up and to help me think clearly. It is very helpful in long car rides for helping me stay alert. I also like to put one drop into my vanilla ice cream for an awesome treat!
Lemon: (cleansing and uplifting)
I use it to clean my house as well as drink a few drops with my water as an antioxidant and detoxifier. Add a drop to honey to sooth a sore throat.
I have loved learning about essential oils and feel that they have empowered me to take care of my family and enhance our lives. With the rising costs of health care and the desire to use natural products and be in charge of my family’s health, these oils are irreplaceable.
