Review: Organic food storage bucket

Sometimes when it comes to food storage, there are some tough decisions to make and one of those is whether or not to include foods that are GMO, commercially canned, and/or filled with chemicals and other additives. Finding organic, non-GMO foods for storage and emergency preparedness can be tricky, but here’s a product you may want to check out.

The Survive2Thrive 40 Days/Nights 100% Organic Food Supply is a basic supply of ingredients that can be cooked and eaten on their own, combined with each other, or included in recipes with other ingredients.  Everything is packed into a heavy bucket and comes with nutritional information and simple instructions for food preparation. The guys at Enerhealth Botanicals sent me the bucket to try and review, and I have to say, in an emergency, this is perfect for a vegetarianor for non-vegetarians who have meat products in their storage pantry and want to continue eating organic foods, no matter what.  Each item is packed in a vacuum sealed bag designed for long term storage.  Depending on the storage conditions, the food could last for more than 10 years.

Organic foods aren’t important to everybody, but there is good reason to keep it in mind when stocking up on food. Future crises could very easily include limited access to health care and getting and staying healthy now is of utmost importance. If the choice is there between organic and non-organic, GMO and non-GMO, BPA cans and cans without BPA, etc., why not go for the option that might be far better for your body? One complaint that has been made against some freeze-dried meals in the number of additives they contain. The foods in this kit don’t contain anything other than what you see in the package, and everything is grown right here in the United States.

There are a couple of drawbacks to the bucket. Once a package of food has been opened, there is no way to re-seal the packet. You will need some way to keep the food stored, perhaps using a Food Saver or even in Zip-Loc bags or jars. Also, it would be important to get used to eating these foods before a crisis. If your digestive system isn’t used to lots of whole grains and beans, you could face several very unpleasant days!

One suggestion is to buy small amounts of these ingredients from a health food store or a “natural” grocery store and experiment with different recipes and combinations. Really get to know what you and your family like before relying on the 40 Days/Nights bucket for your emergency food source. Of course that applies to any new food storage product.

  1. I may get this kit as it’s probably the only pre-packaged gluten-free organic ready-to-go bucket on the market. But be forewarned of the false advertising: It only provides 1,027 calories per day. See the “Nutritional Breakdown” tab.

    They expect you to get through 40 days of crisis on those few calories. A crisis where you may be lifting, hammering, walking everywhere (or running!), etc.

    They defend this decision by talking about empty calories versus nutrition (see the “Calories vs. Nutrition” tab) but that’s based on a false premise. To thrive you need at least 2000 GOOD calories per day. Else why not eat just 500 calories of the world’s most nutritious foods and be done?

    With my body type and energy output during a crisis I’ll need about 3500 per day. So this kit would last me maybe 10-15 days. Others who need fewer calories (small women/children) might stretch it to 20 days, but I can’t see going beyond that.

    Interestingly, the provide links on the “Calories vs. Nutrition” tab to validate their premise but instead each of them refutes it. This link says I need 2200 calories (non-crisis):

    The only situation in which you would be able to stretch it 40 days is if you were extremely sedentary. But keep in mind that even sitting still all day, you burn calories. My Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) (the number of calories you’d burn if you stayed in bed all day) is 1921. If you’re in a quarantine situation, you could lie in bed all day (only rising to make meals) and probably not suffer weakness.

    So use this as you said to supplement your other storage foods and it’ll really help. I love the organic, gluten-free, whole food options it provides. But don’t think you’ll be able to buy this alone and power through 40 days of crisis without quickly getting weak.

    • It is unfortunate that the above commentary does not fully comprehend or explore the difference between calories and nutrition. One could easily obtain plenty of calories from white bread, hydrogenated margarine and genetically modified soy burgers or CAFO raised meat all at the same time exposing oneself to pesticide residues, inflammation provoking trans fats, vitamin and mineral depleted processed ingredients and more. The obsession with a certain number of calories daily has lead to people consuming calories that are devoid of nutrition. When we are essentially malnourished our bodies begin experiencing ever increasing symptoms of disease. Overeating becomes common in the search for nutrients that are missing in the diet. Do not be fooled! Malnutrition in its literal sense of being poorly nourished, is a rampant problem in the so called developed world. In future commentaries I will post some articles to back up this theory, however for anyone who understands how the human body works it is plainly obvious that the quality of calories is by far the most important factor in good nutrition. The Survive2Thrive Preparedness Pail is intended as emergency food storage. It contains components chosen for their high levels of nutrition and ease of absorption of nutrients. Comparing these foods and the meals they can make up with other stored foods commonly seen on the market, at least for the discerning eye, reveals to the reader and user, that this is a choice between high quality organics and poor quality food that is highly deficient in essential nutrients. Exploring nutrition from the standpoint of how to deliver essential nutrients of high quality to the body should be our focus in modern nutrition. Instead most schools teach us to eat a certain number of calories every day with complete disregard for whether those calories are empty.

      • I applaud a product that is made in the US and is organic as that is how I eat almost every day (even with the higher expense.)

        At the same time, it appears as if, in your response to Christopher, that you are implying that 1000 calories of nutritious food is enough to thrive. This is absolutely not true. If you are burning 1400 calories per day and you eat only 1000 calories per day, there is energy deficit. That deficit will result in the loss of approximately one pound per week. It does not matter how nutritious the calories were, there will be an energy deficit, and over time it will become an issue.

        The nutritious calories will help in other ways, but I feel as if you discarded the original comment way too lightly. The low calories (if you are, in fact, spreading it over 40 days) will most likely result in decreased energy output. You can’t argue with the laws of physics.

        Still, I’m happy to see at least one option for organic long term storage.

  2. Question for you: Have you found a good source of canned / long term food storage non-GMO corn containing products – ie/ masa, cornmeal, powdered sugar, cornstarch, etc.?

  3. Seems like all that food requires A LOT of water to prepare.I suppose you could re-use some of the water from each preparation, but it will still require a great deal of soaking and boiling. I guess if this is your thing, it’s not a bad deal.

    • Yes, pretty much everything does need some water. In their video they explain that all you will need is water, a cooking pot, and some type of cooking stove or campfire. However, beans have long been a survivalist staple, so it’s not like their choice of food is unusual.

  4. Just a note for the comment about this being gluten free, oats are not normally gluten free as most oat fields have wild wheat growing in them. And i have not looked it up but I’m guessing the pancake mix is not gluten free.
