List Contest Winner, 4th Place! Random SHTF Nuggets from a Survival Diva
I consider myself a survival diva. I enjoy life and the many blessings the good Lord has given me and although my life is rosy, I recently removed the “rose colored glasses” and took a look at what life would be like in an emergency situation. Thankfully, we have the basics covered, but I started thinking beyond that and what few things might make me feel a little better in a harsh environment, a “survival diva” if you will.
I made a list of a few random items that came to mind. I’ll warn you, it’s not the traditional glitz and glamour. These are simple, miniscule things now — but in an emergency they will be golden. Here are a few random extra things you may want to consider (in addition to the basics of food, water, first-aid/medication, etc…):
1. The biggest slap in the face for me so far is to Get In Shape! There’s a lot more manual labor needed when the power goes out or there’s no more gas. It will be hand tools and walking. Did you know “a day’s journey” in biblical times is equal to 20 miles?! Even with yoga and a treadmill, I can’t do 20 miles on a good day!! So number one on the list is to get in shape and stay that way!!
2. There is no bigger/better daily luxury than toilet paper. Stock up on the good stuff (not the manly roll of generic sandpaper). This fluffy goodness will be greater than gold! It may be worth mentioning that, “Aunt Flo” doesn’t stop in a crisis, so stock up on the brand of pads and tampons you regularly use too. You can NEVER have enough of any of these items!
3. Canned Gravy. Canned foods are awesome in a crisis, especially if their contents are tasty with little heating. Insert canned gravy here. This is like an EMT for food. If you can’t stock up on the yummy stuff, gravy can make some of the most dry/unappetizing food somewhat edible; it’s cheap and easy–especially if you buy it in bulk.
4. Books. Not just manuals. You’ll figure a lot of these things out on your own (like getting thrown in the lake to learn how to swim). If it’s going to be a long-haul, include FICTION like romance or mysteries. This is the best escape from reality without going anywhere…and you will want to get the heck out of Dodge (aka-post SHTF life) ASAP.
5. Have some “smell good” items. All the grime and work can rob you of feeling pretty. Many of us already fall victim to this on a regular basis and that’s with luxury all around us! Fragrant soap, toothpaste, cologne, & lotion can really build up your morale. Take advantage of samples at the cosmetics counter. They are usually free, portably packaged, and last a long time.
6. Matches, matches, matches! I know, you’re thinking this is a basic on the list but I’m saying GET MORE!!! I’m no caveman, so making a fire from flint and such isn’t my strong point. Buy these cheap boxes of 1000 count matches NOW. Heat & light, ladies. Seriously!
7. Practical clothing. Assuming the world is on “manual” setting, I don’t think that pair of 3” platform heels is going to be very comfortable. My new chiffon skirt won’t keep me very warm when the seasons start to change either. Make sure to have some jeans and work boots/shoes and work gloves. Try going for the cute rancher/cowgirl look. Nothing super glamorous, but you will be a lot happier when the time comes.
8. Another basic that is completely random is a manual hand pump. You know, like in an old farm house kitchen or outside just beside the house? You pump the handle and water comes out? You don’t really see them these days, but if you are lucky enough to have a well this little item is a big ticket!! A well with a manual pump = less work, more joy! No hauling buckets back ‘n forth and a lower risk of calluses.
9. Back to Basics /Self Improvement. This can be learning to sew or knit, making bread from scratch, learning about herbal medicine, taking a self defense/shooting course, etc. This list is endless. Challenge yourself to learn. Things will be more basic and more dangerous and all of this is good to know. Set small goals like making one thing “from scratch” each weekend or learning about the plant life in your area. Some of those plants make great home-made fragrances or lotions! It’s fun and empowering!
My Last random thought but hardly the least–
10. Chocolate. Sometimes hormones are NOT my friend and I crave chocolate or I’ve had a stressful day and just NEED it. Can you imagine the stress & hormones in the middle of the smack? Do yourself a favor and get yourself some a lot of emergency chocolate. You will miss it and you’re gonna need it!
