Disclaimer: I am an affiliate with Freeze Dry Guy. Any purchase you make via this link may result in my earning a small commission. Our very first purchase of freeze-dried food was from Freeze Dry Guy after Ron, the owner, spent at least two hours talking with my husband me about food storage. Their products are high quality and they have been great to work with, both as a customer and an affiliate.

As convienant and tasty as these may be, the portions are very small, (you wouldn’t feel that full on one of the reccomended servings,) and provide half or more of your daily salt requirements. In other words, If I had to live on these, they would kill me.

True that.
Most (all?) of these survival food companies consider 6 oz a serving size. They MAY provide a 1,000 calories. In a SHTF situation you’ll be needing 3,000 to 4,000 to maintain yourself.
Save your money and buy a gun. A rabbit, dove or rat provides more protein and calories.

Freeze Dried food tastes great and has a very long shelf life. Like any other food, you need to put together a nutritional diet via a good menu. It is best to purchase these while on sale since they last for so long. Can you remember what food cost 25 years ago? Can you predict what food will cost 20-25 years from now. Buying this now is a great way to be prepared for emergencies AND if you don’t need them for an emergency, you can each them laster when food costs 20 times more. It is a no brainer.

I buy both freeze dried and dehydrated. Commercially dehydrated foods have as many of their original nutrients as freeze dried, and since they take up less space, you actually get more food for the money.

If you check the ingredients of Mountain House freeze dried foods, you will find that one serving is about 1-1/2 cup, 200-300 calories. Then you would add say, a serving of peas: 1/2 cup – 80 calories, a serving of apples: 1/2 cup, 77 calories, then maybe some delicious raspberry crumble: 1/2 cup, 160 calories. If my calculations are even close, that’s about 600 calories – for one meal – and about 1800 for 3 meals. I believe anyone would do just fine on 1800 calories. If you are a bigger person, eat more.
The main purpose of storing freeze dried or dehydrated food is it’s long shelf life. A thorough prepper would have many other types of foods stored to round out a balanced diet. As tasty as freeze dried food is, I would save it for a far-into-the-future-when-there-is-nothing-else scenario. Nothing stores as long except wheat, sugar, and honey. Sure would be difficult to live on just those 3 things.

I keep most of my FD food stored for long-term also, except a few produce items that I use in my everyday cooking. I love FD sausage crumbles and FD mushrooms, in particular.
