I know we have dozens and dozens of book-crazy readers here at TheSurvivalMom, and if I know one thing about readers, it’s this.  They’re always looking for the next book to read!

This Survival Survey is doubling as a Comment Contest.  In seven days, on Tuesday, 14, two random comments will be chosen, and those lucky winners will receive one of the following prizes.

From Holly, the Shelf Reliance lady, your choice of a Shelf Reliance Gift Basket!  gift basket Comment Contest/Survival Survey: What Are You Reading?OR

From Jeff, the Berkey Guy, a Sports Berkey portable water filter!  sports berkey Comment Contest/Survival Survey: What Are You Reading?

Great prizes, and all you need to do is tell us, “What are you reading?”  If you say that really fast, “Whatareyoureading?”, it sounds like, “What are you eating?”, so you’re welcome to answer that question as well!

For me, I’m reading Stieg Larsson’s The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Oh, and I just finished a Subway Spicy Italian on whole wheat!  Now it’s your turn.

(102) Readers Comments

  1. I am reading The Year's Best Science Fiction anthology, the latest one. I've read several, and they are great for time and attention-short moms! :) I also just had some mujadarrah for breakfast (lentils with rice and friend onions).

  2. I am reading "The Creature from Jekyll Island" about the creation of the Federal Reserve, the history of banking and related politics. I highly recomend it. To relax after reading it, my bedside book is Stephen Kings, "Full Dark, No Stars". Which seems like a happy fairy tale compared to the FED book.

    Steve B.

  3. I am currently reading "The Complete Sportsman's Encyclopedia of Hunting, Fishing & Camping" by Francis H. Buzzacott. Mine is the 1913 edition released again in 2000. Explains "how to" in early 1900's before all our new gear and options. Excellent reading. Also, I just finished reading "The SAS Guide to Tracking" by Bob Carrs. Another excellent read about tracking animals, birds, etc. (food) and people (lost companions, invaders, etc.). Quite interesting and informative. peace & preparedness. Jim

  4. I'm reading The Zookeepers Wife as well as Edible Landscaping…I haven't eaten yet this morning working on that now

  5. I usually have a few books going…one of them right now is my cousin's newly released tween sci-fi fiction book: "The Samantha Granger Experiment: FUSED" By Kari Lee Townsend….oh, and I just had a delicious chicken and grape salad :)

  6. I am reading "The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict" by The Arbinger Institute. I realize that in the coming days the world will be in commotion and I have a sincere desire for my family to be in a place where that commotion will be outside of our home. So far it's a wonderful book. http://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-Peace-Resolving-Hea

  7. 1 Corinthians, today chapter 3…"Gardening When it counts: Growing Food in hard Times" by Steve Solomon and finishing up "Angels" by Charles and Annette Capps.

  8. I'm rereading Survival of the Sickest by Dr Sharon Moalem. If you haven't had a chance to read it, you should! It's a fascinating look at how our genetics and ancestry factor into why we get sick.

  9. I am just finishing Cody Lundin's "When All Hell Breaks Loose".
This past summer/fall, I built 2 solar ovens, and began container gardening.
    I'm still getting tomatoes….in December !

  10. When Autumn Leaves by Amy S. Foster. In these chaotic times it's a great escape and fun to read something that is just pure enchantment. I love the women in the story and the plot sizzles. A bit of fantasy is much needed and always welcome.

  11. I'm reading American History in Black & White, put on hold after the passing of my dad – for whom I care for the last decade, my best friend & buddy. Simply drinking coffee at present, learning how to put one foot in front of the other. All things in their own time, it seems.

    • Sally, so sorry to hear about your dad. Sending heartfelt prayers your way!

      • Prayers of comfort for you, Sally!

  12. As someone who is just getting started–I am way behind on the reading! In the past month I have read-One Second After, Patriots, and Alas, Babylon.I have a list on my phone of other books that I have seen mentioned so that anytime I am in a bookstore, I have it with me. Depending on which ones I can find will depend on what I read next. And for eating–I'm still thinking about it!!

  13. Starting an Online Business For Dummies

  14. I am reading The Essential Wild Food Survival Guide by Linda Runyon that I just received from Amazon.com. Can't wait to see what goodies I can find in my own back yard!

  15. I'm reading Broke by Glenn Beck, just finished One Second After by William Forstchen. Well and of course all the Dr. Suess books, over and over and over again for my three kids.

    • That's so funny! I just finished the same book (One second After) and am also currently reading, Broke. Plus, I have three kids and most of the Dr. Suess books!!

  16. I am readying square foot gardening. As for eating i reheated a pork loin with spinach inside with peas also left over. umm..

  17. I'm reading THE COMING ECONOMIC APOCALYPSE by Dr. David Jeremiah. It presents a Christian view toward recent governmental and world events and ties everything in with Biblical end times' prophecy. I've been impressed with how well-researched it is, giving many detailed statistics, facts, and quotes by world leaders. I highly recommend it.
And for lunch . . . I'm having a microwave dinner, since I'm at work. Fettucine Alfredo with Chicken and Broccoli.
Peace and good will to all of you during this Christmas season–
    Linda

  18. I am readingThe Complete Encyclopedia of Natural Healing by Gary Null. hoping I can learn to rely on herbs I grow to doctor my family. I am eating a piece of toast with mixed fruit jam (that I canned yesterday).

  19. Just started reading Glenn Beck's new book Broke. Amazing how history repeats its self. We need to only look back to the fall of Rome, Greece or Spain to see we are on the same path. This book should be read by everyone. It is a real eye opener about where the money is going and where it went and what we could do about it. I would recommend it, even if you aren't a Beck fan. His research dept is great.

  20. Patriots-James Wesley, Rawles. Enjoying a banana.

  21. I'm reading Patriots by Rawles.

  22. Right now, I have several books I am going between.
    1. C.S Lewis Complete works of The Chronicles of Narnia
    2. Voddie Bauchum's "What He Must Be If He Wants to Marry My Daughter
    3. Barbara Johnson's "Living Somewhere Between Estrogen and Death (great comedy value)
    4. Chicken Soup for the Soul Cookbook
Too busy reading, I forgot to eat lunch.

  23. I'm reading "Dies the Fire" by S.M. Stirling!

    • I read that one, and am still reading one of the sequels!

  24. Reading One Second After, Back to Basics, & eating chicken over rice!

  25. I'm finishing The Real George Washington. Looking forward to starting Original Intent by David Barton.
Nibbling on the few remaining cookies from an ornament / cookie exchange party this weekend.

  26. The Great Brain – to one of my boys :)

And I havent eaten anything yet today – but last night I had beans, rice, cornbread :)

    • I loved all of the Great Brain series. So funny and so glad I am not his mom. Smart kid but would keep you busy.

    • I loved those as a kid, too. :)

  27. Actually, just popped a biscuit in the mouth :)

  28. I am reading the book of John out of the Bible, also Sacred Fire a book about George Washington.

  29. Four underway, between Jesse tree Bible verses and my current obsession with Victorian Farmhouse on Youtube – it's a really good thing the segments are only about 11 minutes long:
The Forgotten Man (Shlaes), Square Foot Gardening (just picked up free block for raised bed borders from Craigslist – yay!), The Divine Conspiracy (Willard), and Trickle Up Poverty (Savage).

  30. Reading “Under The Tuscan Sun” by Frances Mayes. . .again.

It is the perfect way to shut out all the doom and gloom of the current world situation and read about happy occasions. The book gets bonus points for getting me excited about growing, cooking, and eating my own healthy food from my garden. What could be better? :-)

  31. I am reading Just in Case by Kathy Harrison and Ecoholic Home by Adria Vasil

  32. 1) When All Hell Breaks Loose: Stuff You Need To Survive When Disaster Strikes – by Cody Lundin
    2) Adventure Travel In The Third World – by Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin
    3) Tom Brown's Guide to City and Suburban Survival (Field Guide) – by Tom Brown

  33. I am reading three: First, The Underground History of American Education. This is a real WOW book on the serious problems (and possible solutions) to our bad education system in the US. Second, The Last Centurion. Good book, but man does he use WAY to much foul language. Third, Alas Babylon.

I am also continuously reading the compilation of various unrelated writers who all write concerning the same great topics: The redemption of man and the glory of God. Some people call it the Bible…. he he he… :-)

  34. I just finished "I Shall Wear Midnight" by Terry Pratchett and a bowl of cereal (trying to cut calories anywhere to justify the chocolate candy I had this morning!)

  35. I'm reading Carla Emery's "Encyclopedia of County Living" for the umteenth time, because once, twice, even three times is simply not enough. And I'm eating Tamales! yaay! I adore good hand made Tamales.

  36. Just finished "One Second After" and looking for a new read!

  37. I'm reading "The kids from Nowhere", great book about a tough group of kids and bits of native alaskan tradition thrown in. I saw some one is reading "Dies the Fire" by S.M. Stirling. This book is great and I recommend it when you need a good survival read. It is a little sci fi and it was hard for me to get past one of the characters being a wicken. But the book has some great TEOTWAWKT stuff. Like getting a garden growing and working as a community. Another S.M. Stirling book "Island in the Sea of Time" has some similiar topics addressed in a different way. I like his ration's for work and pre 1964 coin currency used in this book.

  38. I'm reading Broke-The plan to Restore out Trust, Truth and Treasure by Glen Beck and eating no bake cookies

  39. The Winter Harvest Handbook by Eliot Coleman and I just finished eating bean soup I made in the crock pot from dried beans (practice for using food storage!).

  40. I just got "The total money make over" by Dave Ramsey. Heating up home made chicken soup as i type and I will garnish with Grilled cheese shamiches. (as the kids call them)

  41. I'm reading the Bible, with a whole new perspective towards survival and preparations for hard times.

I'm eating garlic chicken pizza….while I can still have it delivered.

  42. I'm reading Radical Homemakers by Shannon Hayes. Just started it, but great book so far!

  43. Hello, I am reading FerFal's The Modern Survival Manual: Surviving the Economic Collapse which I heard about first in this site.

  44. Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning by Jonah Goldberg
    http://www.amazon.com/Liberal-Fascism-American-Mu

  45. I just finished both "Civics for Young Americans" and "Island of the Sequined Love Nun". The latter is every bit as serious as the name makes it sound. :-p It was a fun distraction.

I'm also reading "Do Gooders: How Liberals Hurt Those They Claim to Help (and the Rest of Us)" and "American History Revised: 200 Startling Facts that never made it into the textbooks". The history book is really interesting, which is the goal. The author's stated goal is to make history interesting since so many history classes have made it dull.

  46. Just in Case (Kathy Harrison) and All New Square Foot Gardening (Mel Bartholomew)

  47. I am reading many survival blogs, and I am eating chicken tacos :-)

  48. I am also reading The Underground History of American Education by John Taylor Gatto – and Broke by Glenn Beck – and Independence Days: A Guide to Sustainable Food Storage and Presevation by Sharon Astyk – because I have to have at least three books going at once – and now after reading the comments I'm adding a bunch of great books to my "want to read" list . . . oh, and eating macadamia nuts!

  49. I'm reading "The Scourge of God" by S.M. Stirling. It's one of the trilogy that follows the "Dies the Fire" trilogy.

  50. Just finishing up The Edge by Jeffrey Deaver. Great insight into government agencies.
