I know we have dozens and dozens of book-crazy readers here at TheSurvivalMom, and if I know one thing about readers, it’s this.  They’re always looking for the next book to read!

This Survival Survey is doubling as a Comment Contest.  In seven days, on Tuesday, 14, two random comments will be chosen, and those lucky winners will receive one of the following prizes.

From Holly, the Shelf Reliance lady, your choice of a Shelf Reliance Gift Basket!  gift basket Comment Contest/Survival Survey: What Are You Reading?OR

From Jeff, the Berkey Guy, a Sports Berkey portable water filter!  sports berkey Comment Contest/Survival Survey: What Are You Reading?

Great prizes, and all you need to do is tell us, “What are you reading?”  If you say that really fast, “Whatareyoureading?”, it sounds like, “What are you eating?”, so you’re welcome to answer that question as well!

For me, I’m reading Stieg Larsson’s The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Oh, and I just finished a Subway Spicy Italian on whole wheat!  Now it’s your turn.

(102) Readers Comments

  1. I am reading John Grisham's The Street Lawyer and a baby name book! Just finished Stephen King's The Stand.

  2. I'm reading Foxfire (the first one), that hog dressing is pretty interesting. LOL! Am just drinking cinnamon flavored coffee this morning, but made a good Southern meal of meatloaf, collard greens and creamed corn last night, oh and bisquits of course!

  3. I am reading "Lonestar Sanctuary" right now. One of my favorite authors, Terri Blackstock, has just released a favorite book, "Last Light", on Kindle for free. It is the first in a fictional series about what happens when and EMP hits. I am not sure how long it will be free, but you can read it on your PC, Blackberry, Droid, Iphone or a Kindle. All the applications are free to download.
I spent all day making cookies and Christmas cards, so I also ate a lot of cookies and cookie dough. Very nutritious I am sure.

  4. I’ve just started Tom Clancy’s latest: Dead or Alive (oh, and I’m munching on Doritos for breakfast…sad isn’t it?)

  5. I am in the middle of The 5000 Year Leap…but with two young kiddos…I'm moving at a snails pace. We are eating Chicken Enchiladas this evening…and I just started my Emergency Food Prep today! Feels good to start being prepared for the unknown!

  6. I know I already posted what I HAVE read recently–but I have to tell you about a book I got yesterday that I can't put down! It is "Home Invasion" by William W. Johnstone. I picked it up at WM yesterday for $5–says First time in print. It is about a small West Texas town where a homeowner shoots a home invader and the aftermath of "liberal politics" The fed gov declares martial law and sends the Federal Police to confiscate all the guns in town. That's how far I am now–and I can only guess how this would go over in West Texas!!!(OK-so it is the Texan in me talking!)

  7. I'm always reading "When Technology Fails" by Matthew Stein. I think it's absolutely an essential all-around manual and starting point for anyone who is looking to be more prepared to handle the challenges of our future. I especially love his references and resources sections throughout the book. They have been and continue to be an amazing reference for my family as we continue with our preparedness education.

  8. I'm reading "Alas, Babylon" and eating leftover gluten-free pasta.

  9. One Second After, is what I'm currently reading.

    a very tired mommy!

  12. I'm reading the history of American Christmas Consumerism & studying the origins of Christmas Carols, Maximizing Your Food Saver & The Book of John. This week we are eating foods that we are considering for storage. We're not canned food fans so this is an adventure to determine what we find "palatable" … eat what you store, store what you eat! On a fun note, we are also 'survivalizing' Alton Brown & Cooking Light recipes – yummy!

  13. The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning. I am re reading the first four book because the final book in the series comes out Jan. 18th 2011 and I want to make sure that I have not forgotten anything that has happened in the last four books.

Dorky I know but it's a really good series!

Next Reading: On Killing by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman and DC Comics Star Man Omnibus Vol. 3

Since I stopped paying for TV a few years back I've found graphic novels to be great light reading, especially since most movies and some TV shows are based on them now days anyway. (300, Watchmen, The Crow, The Walking Dead, ex.) I get to know whats going on months before my friends watch it on the silver screen (which is funny since it costs about an oz. of silver to go to the movies now days.)

  21. I reading The Encyclopedia of Country Living and James Herriots Dog Stories

  22. This week I'm reading 2 Samuel. And, eating home made fried rice. Fried in rendered bacon fat, butter and sesame oil. :o ) Yum! It was brown rice chock full of veggies, that should make up for the artery clogging fat, right? ;o)

  23. I'm reading "Making it All Work"

  24. I am reading Term Limits and also Atlas Shrugged.

  25. Just finishing "Broke" and well into "The Count of Monte Cristo". At the moment I'm snacking on fresh Poppy Seed bred.

  26. I'm reading "Extraordinary Ordinary People", Condoleeza Rice's autobiography. I'm sipping on Stash Chocolate Hazelnut tea and waiting for my daughter to finish the blueberry muffins.

  27. I just finished One Second After and World Made by Hand. Both very good with similar aspects – although World Made by Hand is from a more liberal approach. Have a Merry Christmas

  28. I just finished A Christmas Carol by Dickens for my book club. Next up is a Joshlyn Jackson novel Backseat Saints.

  29. I've just ordered a copy of the recently released "Lights Out" by David Crawford from Amazon. There is also a limited number of copies available from the Survival Monkey forum.

  30. Breaking Dawn :)

  31. I'm reading "the 5000 year leap" by W. Cleon Skousen. I just finished, for the second time, "Patriots" by James Wesley, Rawles.

  32. I have read Alas Babylon, One Second After, Earth Abides, Malevil, From Dawn to Dusk, Mysterious Island, Swiss Family Robinson, and Robinson Crusoe in the past year for fiction and for non-fiction I have read many survival type books and books about Amish cooking and gardening books. I try to skim at least all the cookbooks I collect
but of course don't sit down and read every recipe. The Little House serious of books and The Little House Cookbook are great to read as well. I just finished watching "Eduardian Farm" series on You tube getting ready to watch the "Victorian Farm" next on you tube they are long series originally on BBC. If you get the chance watch them. The give some real lessons on learning about the old ways of doing things and surviving with little money.

  33. What did I learn from "Alas, Babylon"? I learned to have enough salt in my food storage to use for personal use and
barter. Also learned that I will have to get used to a barter style of life.
What did I learn from "One Second After" have enough meds to sustain my husband with his diabetes. Medicines may be unavailable especially insulin after and EMP so I have stored a years supply of his oral medications and
have stored loads of cinnamon and the appropriate vitamins and minerals to keep him as stabilized as possible. Also have gotten much literature on natural methods of controlling blood sugars.
Also learned to have food storage for at least a year.

  34. Crash Proof 2.0

    One Second After

    98.6 Degrees

    FM 3-05.70

    The secret of Father Brown

    Global economics by Ettore Gotti

The Way by Escriva de Balaguer

    SAS Survival

  35. Two books, actually: as a new prepper, and actually waiting on my CWP (yea!), I'm reading The Cornered Cat, which is a fabulous book for anyone who is carrying, and also just started my copy of Survivors. I have so much to learn!!!

  36. I’m reading “The Mockingjay” third book in the Hunger Games trilogy. Prior to that I read “Lights Out” by David Crawford. And a bunch of Love Inspired Suspense books.

  37. Gods of Money: Wall Street and the Death of the American Century
    F. William Engdahl
Seeds of Destruction: The Hidden Agenda of Genetic Manipulation by the same author
Both excellent and you need to read Seeds of Destruction before you plant that garden of non-hybrid seeds!

  38. My latest read: “The Harbinger” by Jonathan Cahn. Anyone out there concerned about our country’s economy should read this. I read it through twice, back to back. Although a novel, it is full of facts with footnotes. A “very interesting” read!

  39. I am reading my Bible, just getting started on food preparing for natural disasters an emergencies, cant wait to start reading lots of books on that.

  40. Just finished reading “Folks, This Ain’t Normal” by Joel Salatin. Must say, I like his way of thinking. His other books are as good. Also am working on You Can Farm by Joel Salatin, and hoping to soon get How to Earn Extra Money in the Country. We’re in a subdivision, not really country, but my soon-to-be 9 year old is looking for ways to make a little $ this summer. Local farmer’s market, here we come!

  41. I’m reading “Last Light” by Terri Blackstock. Great book for making one aware of what an EMP scenario could leave us with. “One Second After” is also a good one!

    • I read the whole restoration series by blackstock (loved the family & faith aspect of the stories) and one second after as well (very good, written more from a man’s prespective). I’ve just finished Patriots by Rawles (enjoyed the NATO forces coming in!!?? hadn’t thought of that! fascinating) and have started reading Survivors by Rawles.

  42. I’m reading, “The Unthinkable: Who survives and why” by Amanda Ripley; The United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights; ” Holding your Ground: Preparing for Defense if it all falls apart” by Joe Nobody; finished “Patriots” and starting “Survivors” by James Wesley Rawles. I have some books on my phone, like “The U.S. Army Survival Guide”, but liked it so well that I bought a hard copy from Amazon. It is wise to have all hard copies of your reference books…cant count on the Grid to stay up. Buy extras if you can find them cheap enough. Reference books will be a great bartering commodity. Just printed off the computer,”Acorns and Eat’em” by Suellen Ocean. I made the acorn flour, made the acorn n mushroom stew, made the acorn cookies, froze 1/2 gallon of acorn flour and 2 quarts of dried, salted acorn nut pieces for baking….carry on!

  43. I am reading Food Storage and Garden Gourmet by Traci Sellers and tonight we are have Fresh Asparagus compliments of our generous neighbor!!

  44. Your website ;)

  45. Last year I read: Alas, Babylon (re-read this – had read it in college)
    The World Hand Made
The Road (better than the movie)

This summer so far I’ve read:
    One Second After
The Restoration series by Blackstock (4 books)
    Patriots by Rawles
    Happy Summer!!!
