About That Glenn Beck Show…
I feel like I just got home from the best party ever. Huge doses of adrenaline keept me awake and excited until last night when I crashed. Hard.
Here’s where my Glenn Beck story begins…
On Wednesday afternoon, my daughter was attending a class, and I had some time on my hands so I checked my email. Oh, who am I kidding? I check my email ten times a day! Anyway, I had received an email from Karen with Fox News in the subject line. I saw that she was interested in talking with me and there might be an interview the next day.
Karen had lots of questions about food storage, how to store water, and a lot more, and we had a great conversation with a lot of laughs. About halfway through, she casually mentioned that she worked for Glenn Beck. That’s when my world went crazy. An hour or so later she called to see if there was any way I could fly to New York the next day for the live Glenn Beck show. Now, I’m not stupid. I knew that being on his show was A Really Big Deal so, of course, I said yes.
Thank God Macy’s was open late because, naturally, I had nothing to wear. I barely got any sleep and in the morning found myself on a flight to the Big Apple. Every once in a while I said to myself, “I am on my way to New York to be on the Glenn Beck Show!” Then I’d get a really big smile on my face. I wonder what the other passengers thought.
Oh! My biggest worry wasn’t so much being on TV in front of millions of people, as my best friend, Diana, kept reminding me, but of whether or not I would have to be groped or go through the nude cube. I had told my kids all about this obnoxious intrusion on our rights just a few days before, so when the time came for me to leave, I told them they could vote. Should Mom be groped or go through the nude cube. They voted unanimously that I should be groped. Fortunately, I was spared that experience and only had to do the standard shoes/jacket off, put everything in multiple plastic bins, and walk through a metal detector. I passed with flying colors.
Fox provided a driver for me at the airport, and soon I found myself in the lobby of News Corporation, the home of Fox News. A producer, Mina, came to collect me and whisked me off to hair and make-up. (Oooh, I love saying those words!) I just let the gals work their magic on me and prayed for their success. I was running on about three hours of sleep and looked it.
It turned out that the green room (a waiting area) actually had very little in the way of green, but it didn’t matter. I was doing my survival breathing and was eerily calm. After a few minutes of waiting, someone said, “He’s here!” In walked Glenn Beck, big as life. And he actually is a pretty big guy. I was expecting to see someone the size of Michael J. Fox. You know how they look big on TV or in the movies, and when you see them they’re actually tiny little people? Well, Glenn was tall and you know, he looks EXACTLY like he does on TV! He shook my hand, greeted everyone and then headed off for make-up. I doubt he needs much in the way of hair styling.
The studio where the show is filmed is a lot smaller than it looks on TV. We were seated in rows and told to only clap when we were told to and not look directly into the cameras. That got a little tricky because this one particular cameraman was everywhere and hard to ignore.
When Glenn started his monologue, I was captivated. Not so much by the content, although it was interesting, but because I knew I was watching a genius at work. Love him, hate him, agree with him or not, he’s an amazing professional at what he does. I have two decades of teaching and training under my belt and recognize genius when I see it. I noticed that the show is kind of unplanned. Glenn does his monologue but during a couple of commercial breaks, he was talking about what to do next. At one point, he even asked the audience what information would be most helpful in the next segment. (In this segment, my interview starts at 2:50.)
Yes, I wish I had had more time to talk! Of course! Talking is what I do! But the studio audience was part of the show that night, and a lot of them had things they wanted to say about food prices and storage. Glenn packs a lot in his show, and I imagine that his producers never know exactly what will happen next.
Was I nervous? Not a bit. Maybe that was because so many of you were nervous for me and were sending tons of prayers and best wishes my way! I hope I appeared calm and didn’t have the classic deer-in-the-headlights look. I still haven’t seen the video. I think I’m worried that when I do, I’ll focus on something stupid like how my hands looked or should I have crossed my ankles or that my necklace was off center. I’m one of those darn oldest child/perfectionist freaks! In a way I want to remember the feeling and the whole experience and not be tempted to pick apart what I did or didn’t do. Yeah, I’ll watch the video eventually, but not today.
When the show was over, and it flew by, Glenn gave me a hug. I may never wash that denim jacket! He is just as friendly and real as you might expect. I never got the feeling that I was in the presence of a diva. The two producers who managed the whole event, Mina and Karen, love Glenn, and that says a lot.
So, there you have it. In just a few minutes, Glenn communicated the urgent need to think about the future, coming hard times, and how moms can help prepare their families. Food storage is just one part, but it’s a big part. If the time ever comes when I’m standing in the rubble of my home, or our lives, and my kids look up at me to ask, “Mom, will we be all right?”, I want to be able to say, “Yes!”.
Thanks, Glenn, for helping spread the word that moms, any mom, can start today to make a more secure future for their families.
(Thanks, Karen and Mina, for everything and for making me feel important!)

While I'm not a fan of Mr. Beck, I think it's ridiculously cool and fantastic that you got to talk about food storage and prepping on his show. Seriously cool.
I hope none of the scenarios that we're preparing for ever become reality, but if they do, I'll have you to thank (in part) for helping me prepare my family.
Thanks for what you do!
Andrea
You were awesome! I watched you from Ohio and you came across very calm and collected. I too wish you'd had more time to talk…although I must admit some of his conspiracy theories were interesting to listen to…(bear in mind that Watergate started out as *just a conspiracy theory* LOL)
Congrats!
TheSurvivalMom
Thanks, Andrea. Maybe next time I'll be able to present my own conspiracy theories. I'd love to write on his chalkboard. (And I don't mean anything suggestive by that! LOL)

It's not paranoia if they're really after you.
rightwingmom
I think TheSurvivalMom has experienced "The Beck Affect" and in a good way. HA!
TheSurvivalMom
Well, if he ever decides to delve into my background and look for conspiracies, that might not be so much fun! LOL It's possible, with that Six Degrees of Separation thing going, I could have a Soros connection, too!

I loved seeing you on GB, I have been following your site for a few months and love it!
Thank you for you all you do,

Thanks so much!

Glen is a bit theatrical but usually right on the money. His books display common sense.

My wife and I had been talking about preparedness for a while now. We are big fans of GB and (since I'm here writing this) now we are appreciative fans of your site. I hope I never have to put any of this into practice but you have gotten us off the dime. We started today with our list of things we might need and boy am I supprised how quickly it grew. On our way to COSTCO in Va. today and appreciate all the wise advice on your site.

Congratulations Lisa! I just now saw the interview. Well done and kudo's to you for making the show. Beck is fun to watch, but most importantly I'm glad you got to spread the word in such a big venue!

Since I always feel "behind the times" LOL I watched the entire show online today. You did a fabulous job and looked great! Many thanks for all this great info you share & I'll have to tune into Glenn Beck more often ~ he is an impressive presenter.

Lisa, I learned of your site from GB's show. So glad I did. I am so impressed that you only started this two years ago. Your site looks amazing and I am eager to get started.. Thanks for giving us a "behind the scenes" GB tour. Really nifty.
BTW you looked GREAT on camera, not nervous and very professional.
God bless you!

Aloha Lisa!
No Worries!
I am so happy that you were a guest on the Glenn Beck show. He has a great following. You are right on the mark saying that he is professional and knowledgeable. Hawaii Dad and I have been watching him a lot since the first of the year. I love his Friday night series when he goes into the history of America and our Founding Fathers. I just wished that he had given you more time to give more of your advice and practical wisdom on preparedness! You have so much to share. Regardless, the "seed" has been planted. I hope people start storing food and water, at the very least. BTW – you looked great! Very calm, and I did notice how nicely you had crossed your legs!!!
Kathy
I thought you were terrific!! I watch the show every day, and when I saw you, I said "Hey, that's Survival Mom"!! Great job!!
Mary
I was thrilled when I read that you were headed to NY to be on GB. I am so glad you didn't have to submit to a groping (ugh). You looked great, pretty, confident and professional. I was like you and many others, disappointed you didn't get to talk more, but hey, it is the big time and you made a great impact in the time you had. (I also noticed that you didn't choke on your spit, LOL), but I was impressed not once but twice, you not only were on Glenn Beck, but did you notice that James Wesley Rawles mentioned you on survivalblog? Pretty darn cool!!!

Congrats again. I've met several celebs and gotten to knwo a few a bit more than casually. Most are pretty good people (at least to the extent you wouldn't mind having a pizza and beer with).
Never met Beck 1-on-1. Closest I got was the 8/28 rally. Wish I could. I have several questions for him about his POV and conclusions.

Saw you on Glenn Beck, my hubby and I (even our 9 yo daughter) are big fans of his show. Thank you for some commonsense ideas and a "human" face to survival-ism. You did just great and I'm glad to hear that you got to fly with your dignity in tact. My family will be driving until commonsense replaces what has taken hold at the TSA. Thanks again and God Bless!

Lisa-you were as cool as a cucumber and came across as rational and thoughtful in your approach to preparedness. No "the sky is falling" but "this is how to take care of my family when difficult times come". Also thanks for confirming to me what I already thought about Glenn-personable, smart, and with a passion for what he does.
juju_mommy
You were awesome! Go Girl!
TheSurvivalMom
Thanks, juju! It was fun, but the next night I was dealing with vomiting kids! Quite a jolt back into reality! LOL
Kati
I’ve been reading your blog for sometime now, and trying to get my family on board in preparedness. That wasn’t going very fast until they watched you on the Glenn Beck show. Thank you for your service!
TheSurvivalMom
Glad to hear that, Kati. It's just a matter of doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.
Zack
Missed it live but watched it on you tube – you did great! – didn't look nervous at all. Thanks for all that you do. My wife and I are new to prepping and your non-alarmist approach to prepping has helped us start down this path with conviction but not desperation.
JVan
I watched the GB show w/ you. You were great. I agree w/ another commenter who said "No sky falling". My family, who up until now, had been very reluctant about any prepping. They watched you too, and are now seeing that it is smart to be prepared for any crisis. I went shopping for this months rotation of pantry items and now I know who else in my community watches GB. I realize it is the holiday season, but I noticed people buying multiples of items, and not of just the "usual" foods that you use during holidays. Thanks for what you do through this blog, keep up the good work. We need you. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.
Karen
Thank you for the backstage report. I have heard nothing but good things about Glenn Beck, so I am not surprised he is really a warm and real man. How fun for you!! You are in the Big Leagues now!! You will have other great opportunities to help and inform people in these new forums for you!! Cool!!! We must pray for Glenn, his family and staff as they are ruffling the feathers of a lot of very powerful people.
Robin
I love Glenn Beck – I listen to his radio program every day. When he first started talking about food storage last week, I immediately thought of a ton of different blogs that I read – all of the authors who could offer him the insight and knowledge that they needed to convey to the audience. I'm glad he found you! Sounded like he and Pat needed all the help they could get. Good thing they have wives to keep them straightened out!
TheSurvivalMom
What a nice compliment, Robin! Thanks so much. Food storage sounds so mysterious to most people when, really, it's pretty basic stuff. Thanks for visiting my blog.
Grayson
Lisa you were great, watched the show live from UK just love Glenn Beck !
prepperMom
I set the DVR to watch you on GB. You did great! And you looked wonderful …. there, now you don't have to watch and criticize your appearance! I really liked that he had other moms on the show talking about preparedness too … we have ALL got to get it together! Great encouragement and information. I hope they all check out your site.
Nana
I saw you on GB and from that show learned of this site. So glad I stopped by. learning lots of tips here. Thank you!
Tim
I also saw you on Glenn Beck. LOVE the site (it is now marked as a favorite). Thanks for doing this. (By the way, I am a survival DAD!!)
