BOOK RECOMMENDATION: The American Boy’s Handy Book

My son has the heart of an adventurer, a hero. When he was only two, he made a “gun” out of a pizza crust, and I knew, then, that there was no point in fighting it. Instead, I’ve given him my blessing and permission to be all boy!
A few months ago, I found a book that speaks to that adventurous heart of his, The American Boy’s Handy Book. It’s a new edition of a classic book first published in 1882. My little guy has studied knot-tying techniques, how to spear fish, and snowball warfare. He’s even tried to teach our Basenji to retrieve using ideas in Chapter 24!
The book has thirty-one chapters chock-full of ideas to keep your adventure-loving boy busy while learning practical, timeless skills.

I think it should be called The American Boys Dream Handbook. I remember as a boy thinking up the same ideas presented in this book! If i had only had the book at that age.
I think it would of made my boyhood days more complete. This is a great find. I will be adding it to my library list!

I believe this book was written by a founder of the Boy Scouts. He definitely had a good idea of what boys find interesting.

I've got a 16 month old who is already heading down this path –> All boy! I hope to teach him lots of survival techniques by the time he's five. My daughter could light a fire in the wilderness with one match when she was in her early teens, so my boy will have the same skill set. I'll look that book up.

You also might want to lay your hands on copies of 'You Can Make it' and 'You Can Make It For Profit' originally published by the National Committee on Wood Utilization in 1929 to 1931, and reprinted by Algrove Publishing, a division of Lee Valley Tools. 'Handy Farm Devices ( And How To Make Them), also reprinted by Algrove is another excellent book on low-tech farm essentials.

I treasured my old copy for years, until through hard use it fell apart and was discarded. I am glad to see it in an updated edition. The author wrote another book following the same concept, which is also very enjoyable.
