INSTANT SURVIVAL TIP: Produce of the Month Club
Retailers typically have their White Sales in the month of January. Bed linens and towels are marked down every year during this month-long discount spree. Did you know that produce sales are just as predictable? If you know ahead of time what will be in season each month, and at bargain prices, you can make plans to freeze, dehydrate, and can these fruits and veggies at their peak ripeness. From Frugal Living, watch for low prices during these months:
January – oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, tangelos, lemons, papayas, cabbages: red, white and green; leeks, broccoli, cauliflower
February – oranges, tangelos, grapefruit, lemons, papayas, broccoli, cauliflower
March – pineapples, mangoes, broccoli, lettuce
April – pineapples, mangoes, zucchini, rhubarb, artichokes, asparagus, spring peas, broccoli, lettuce

Also, check out farmer’s markets and produce co-ops for discounts on bulk purchases of produce. The produce co-op I participate in has spread from Arizona into Idaho, Utah, and Washington. If you’re lucky enough to live in one of those states, check out Bountiful Baskets. Last week I bought 20 pounds of gorgeous tomatoes for $10. I’ve been busy dehydrating them and making salsa and eating them with salt and pepper!
Buy luscious, fresh produce in season, save money and add to your food storage. A Survival Mom just can’t get any smarter than that!
