Listen in! TheSurvivalMom gets some air time!

Yesterday morning I had the privilege of being interviewed by Virginia Prescott of New Hampshire Public Radio.  Jessica Bennett of Newsweek, the terrific reporter who wrote Survivalism Lite, was on the interview as well.  You can listen to the interview here.  Virginia is a terrific journalist, and I enjoyed being challenged by her interesting questions.

The $4000 or so we’ve spent on our food storage, as reported in Newsweek and in this interview, continues to be mentioned and questioned.  Some have commented, “I could feed my family for a year on that!”  Well, we have about six month’s worth of food, at least, but some of the 4K has been invested in freeze-dried food, which is more expensive up front.  Part of our freeze-dried goods include meat, chicken, and cottage cheese, among the most expensive freeze dried foods on the market.  With growing kids and a hungry husband, I wanted to be sure that we had protein in a variety of forms: freeze dried, frozen, canned, and dehydrated.  Whatever you’re doing with your food storage and other preps, just keep doing what you’re doing, where you are, with what you have.

  1. I must admit that my family does not have as much food stored as you. Why people would question your choice to stock that is strange. Could it be because it makes them notice how vulnerable they are and not prepared? Your blog is a daily inspiration to me. I just did a podcast on Stocking Up in Moderation, not hoarding. I’m trying to carry the torch too. All the best Lisa.

  2. the odd thing is that not to long ago having a pantry stocked with food was the norm. Now that there is a supermarket on every corner with stocked shelves it has become too easy to just pick up groceries every couple days. Of course people like us ask ourselves what happens when those stores don't open or those shelves are bare. Great interview.

    • I know!!! It really has been just in the past 70 years, or less, that we have gotten away from just about any thought of the basics of survival. Thanks for the compliment.

  3. Excellent interview.

    • I thought Virginia was just an excellent interviewer, and Jessica did a great job of not stereotyping preppers.

  4. Congrats on the interview. Looks like you are getting a bit famous!

    • That Newsweek article brought a lot of attention to my blog. It's hard to tell if it's because I'm a freak to most people (Wow! A survivalist who's a mom! A mom who's a survivalist!) or if there truly is a big movement out there toward preparedness and a huge interest in it. I'm preparing, HA!, to offer some workshops in my area, and that will give me an idea of the level of interest that's out there. Thanks for the kind words, Raven. :o )
