INSTANT SURVIVAL TIP: Paper or plastic?

paper plate 225x300 INSTANT SURVIVAL TIP: Paper or plastic?

How quickly would your kids line up to do the dishes if all they had to do was throw them in a campfire?  Doing dishes would instantly become the most popular chore in the house!  This would never work with your best china, but with paper plates, it can.

While you’re stocking up on canned goods and bottled water, throw in a few hundred paper plates while you’re at it.  In an emergency, especially one in which water may be scarce, the last thing you’ll want to do is waste time and water washing dishes.

  1. Great tip! I don't usually do paper/plastic plates (trying to be environmentally friendly) but in an emergency situation, I believe that would be an exception. Plus, those thin paper plates are thin so they probably don't take much to breakdown (could probably even add to the compost). I may grab a few packs and add to my food storage bins (i.e. out of the sight of the family who'd be tempted to grab that instead of a regular plate!) for a backup.

PS. I will admit, though, that I always use those thin paper plates for camping. We just throw them in the fire….

    • I'm all in favor of anything that will save me time washing dishes!

  2. And they make dandy targets come practice time.

  3. I just bought five packs of small paper plates cheap on clearance. They're for a baby shower, but if we need them, I can't imagine I'll really care.

We also have a several Costco packages of the blue paper towels in the basement. They're designed for garage use and are so much thicker than normal paper towels that it's like comparing a paper napkin to a cloth napkin. And much more useful than the normal paper napkins.

    • If a nuke hits, I can guarantee you, no one will care if your plates say, "Happy First Birthday" or "Congratulations, it's a boy!" LOL Costco is a great resource for paper goods in bulk. I'll check those blue paper towels out. I've never used them before.

  4. Paper plates can be reinforced with plastic plate inserts. I found them (4 / $1) at Walmart in the picnic section. They give support to a flimsy paper plate. If they do get food on the rim, they clean up with a damp paper towel. We've used ours for years on camping trips.

    • That's a great suggestion. I've doubled up on paper plates before, to give them more heft, but yours' is a great idea because it would be sturdier. Thanks!

  5. Good post, for drinks everyone in our house has original Kleen Kantene, the original can also have items cooked in it so you can have a single container for all your needs :)

    Keep up the good work.

    • One more product I'm going to have to look into. Thanks for the tip.

  6. Ive been debating ordering some plates / bowls from http://www.thewholeleafco.com, although tbh if push comes to shove i guess paper plates would work just as well if reinforced with something else behind it and a heck of alot cheaper!
