Survival Survey: What is your #1 preparedness resolution for the New Year?

survival mom feature prepared 300x126 Survival Survey: What is your #1 preparedness resolution for the New Year?

Preparedness isn’t a one time event or a short-term effort.  It’s really a mindset and a way of thinking and looking at the world.  There aren’t too many preppers who feel they’re 100% prepared for every event, from a nuclear attack to a shortage of toilet paper.  Most of us talk about what we’ve done today or this week to prepare, knowing that setting priorities and taking small steps will add up in the end.

So, with an entire New Year ahead of you, what is your #1 resolution for being more prepared this year?  Mine is to do more prepping beyond food storage.  For example, I’ve been wanting to add a solar powered battery charger to my inventory.  My kids need better equipped Bug Out Bags/72 Hour Kits, and I want to increase our water storage.

  1. My #1 resolution is to become more physically fit. And since I'm not waiting until the new year to start working on my resolutions, today is my 3rd day in a row exercising. Tomorrow will be a day off. And I'm working hard on eating less junk and more fruits and veggies.

    • Fern, I am right there with you! I've been trying to do something active everyday with the kids — walks or bike rides, and getting all of us away from junk food and eating more veggies and fruit. Good luck with your fitness goals!!!

  2. I have a huge "to do" list for prepping this next year. We're re-starting our food storage, after having lived on it for a bit when my husband was out of work (thank goodness for that storage)! Next, I'm working on our BoBs, and have just purchased 7 backpacks for the purpose. Trying to figure out water and food for car kits, and we live in SE Colorado where we have temperature extremes of both cold and hot…so that's a bit of a challenge. I'm also learning some important skills! I just got a drop spindle kit, my first cast iron dutch oven, and a pressure canner complete with over 50 jars and lids. I think skills are just as important as the storage prep! Trying to focus on less time on the computer and more time in real life doing things that matter for my family's long term survival and the preservation of our way of life even unto TEOTWAWKI :-)

  3. I love your # 3 on the 21 list…. There is a great work book on Sugardoodle to become spiritually prepared. I love it and think it is important to spiritually as well as physically prepared. Here is the link if you haven't seen it. Working on this workbook is my #1 goal for 2010…along with the continual process of food storaged and safety skills.

  4. My #1 thing to do for 2010 is to look into taking some skill enhancing classes to learn medical training, short wave radio classes and to take some more gardening classes.

  5. I'm with Tess – training. I'm taking CPR this weekend when my son's preschool teachers recertify (and I got a good rate) and Gardening Basics through a county-run program. I'm also looking into Wilderness First Aid (just in case) through the Girl Scouts. I really want to find a First Responder first aid class but haven't yet. Regardless of any SHTF, my youngest makes me feel a STRONG need for rock-solid first aid skills! And I'll try to pick up some other classes at the local Gardening Centers. DH is thinking about learning Ham Radio to do with the kids.

    • Cabela's and Sportsman's Warehouse has occasional classes in things like wilderness survival and dutch oven cooking. I've been keeping an eye on their class schedules to find ones that I can attend. Whatever happens, we'll be equipped for a more adventurous lifestyle, that's for sure!

      • I wish we had one near us. I do now have the Red Cross CPR (infant, child and adult), AED, and first aid class. I was told to contact them directly because they don't offer the First Responder class to the public often, but they might add me to a class they're scheduling with a firefighter or police unit.

And I really wish you hadn't told me about Steep and Cheap.

  6. I'm trying to be realistic about my list this year. I'm pregnant with my 4th and it's hilarious at how my nesting has changed! Before I was worried about closets being cleaned out, now I'm planning 1st aid classes, how to make homemade stuff, wanting to plant a garden, dehydrating everything I can find and more! :) I hope to start on some CERT classes that are being offered here in my town. They are FREE, require no further commitment, and train you in emergency/disaster and first aid. I'm excited about it–has anyone else ever taken this training? I'd love to hear your experience. Thanks!

    • I think that just being AWARE is helpful, even when you do less prepping or, for a while, none at all. Last year there were a couple of months when I added very little to my food storage because funds were just too low. As usual, though, I kept up with current events, talked with friends who are prepping, and I would say my time was rather well used in spite of not actually BUYING anything. Enjoy your pregnancy, do what you can, and if nothing else, read, read, read!

    • Something I stumbled upon while I was pg with my first is fabric called "bed sheeting". You can buy it for about $4 a yard at the fabric store. It's waterproof, thick, and feels soft like flannel. I have a one yard square I used for diaper changes for both of mine that has been washed often for at least three years and, aside from some fading, it's still fine. And we can use it under messy craft projects now. Even with a squirmy two year old, a one yard square is big enough that they can't squirm off and cover the surrounding area with poop and germs easily.

I want to look into CERT classes as well. I saw that they exist online but nothing further. I'm trying to get Emergency First Responder classes through the Red Cross. You need a group of six to do it and it's 40 hrs, but I think it will be soooo worth it.

      • Liz, food and water is important, but learning some first responder skills might be even more important. About a year ago I witnessed a very violent car crash. Two teenage boys raced through a red light, hit a concrete irrigation block, and one of them was thrown out the truck window. I had a front row seat of the whole thing, and my response fascinated me, even as it was happening. I sat there in disbelief, and then was confused as to which car the truck had hit first, and to top all that off, realized I didn't know much about first aid, other than knowing not to move the vitim and cover him with a blanket to help avoid shock. Actually, that wasn't too bad, considering the last time I had any lessons in First Aid was back in junior high! I'm glad you mentioned CERT, because that has been something I've been wanting to do for a while. I'll add it to my To Do list!!

  7. I will be extending my garden this year. I will add 10 blueberry plants and 1 quince tree. I add a few new plants tthat come back every year.

    • I was just reading about all the health benefits of blueberries. I wish I lived in a climate where they would grow. The best I can do are the big bags of frozen berries at Costco! Your garden sounds wonderful! Keep us up to date with what's growing and how you're preserving all the extra produce. Lucky you!
