Can the soft white wheat, kamut, rice and oat groats all be ground in the Country Living Mill?
I just got mine and I'm unfamiliar with what grains can be ground - I've only tried wheat, which is wonderful by the way.

My other comment is that I have read that wheat, once it is ground, loses its nutritional rather rapidly and dramatically. I'm not so sure about the comment of losing "a little nutritional value" I think you would lose alot. I think it would be good to look into the stats on that.

When you're ready, check ebay, Craigslist, and even thrift shops for wheat grinders. There's no need to spend a bundle, especially since you're just getting started and already spending extra on food for storage. Yes, all those foods you mention will last longer than three months. Brown rice contains oils, so it won't last as long as white rice. However, it can be refrigerated for a longer shelf-life -- possibly a year or more. Sugar lasts almost forever as long as it's kept dry. Flour has a shelf-life of a year. Be sure to put the flour in air-tight containers and leave them in the freezer for two weeks to insure that any microscopic insect eggs won't hatch. The reason I recommend buying and storing wheat rather than flour is because wheat has a shelf life of 20-30 years.

I am new and know nothing about storage. I've been trying to gather the tools needed to get started, but haven't even gotten all of that yet. Not enough money and now a wheat grinder. I am looking for foods that I can store for longer than 3 months. I thought that brown rice, sugar and other gluten-free flour, once sealed properly, would last for more than 3 months? Can someone please make this easier to understand for us beginners?

Can you use white rice instead of brown? I don't store brown because of the spoilage issue.

Yes, the oil in brown rice will go rancid after a while. You can store it in the fridge or freezer, if you have the extra space. Check out Chrystalyn's article about Super Rice for some really good tips. Here's the link: <a href="http://wp.me/py0Un-AH" target="_blank"><a href="http://wp.me/py0Un-AH</a>" target="_blank">http://wp.me/py0Un-AH</a></a>

I have read somewhere recently that brown rice spoils within a few months. Do you have a specific way of storing it so it does not spoil or do you store another kind for long -term food storage? Thanks in advance for your time! I have loved your articles - I am getting such an education from this site!
