Self-Sufficiency Reading for Kids
In case you haven’t figured this out yet, I am a complete book-aholic. There’s nothing I love more than a library or bookstore, and Amazon is a dream come true! A couple of clicks with the mouse, and a new book is mine. All mine!!
To teach my kids about the importance of being self-sufficient and providing examples they can relate to, I’ve been reading aloud to them books like Farmer Boy and The Courage of Sarah Noble. Reading aloud gets our whole family involved in the story, which launches some great discussions. You might be able to access audiobook versions of them using some of my suggestions here. Here are a few of the books we have either read or we’re planning to read.

Depending on their age, I'd add a lot of Jack London to the mix. More 'preparedness' than 'self-sufficiency', and too dark for young kids.

Another classic children's tale of survival is Call it Courage by Armstrong Sperry. Disney even made a movie out of this one back in the 60's. The story is set in the islands of the South Pacific, but the crux of the plot is the change in the ATTITUDE of the main character and his growth from thinking like a boy to thinking like a man, which applies to all locations and times in all cultures. Highly recommended.

My Side Of The Mountain was a great movie and I bet the book would be good too.
