The secret to survival? Look both ways!

Today my daughter and I were running errands in the Tahoe, and before long, we came to a busy intersection.  I slowed down and was waiting for traffic to clear when I heard her say, “You can go.  There’s nobody coming.”  If I had followed her advice, we would have been slammed by a black Hummer and a Ford F150 in quick succession.  You see, she had been checking the traffic only on her side of the road. 

Many people who believe that nothing in our world has changed and that the future is one of prosperity and security are viewing events and circumstances on only one side of the road, so to speak.  Whether from disinterest, laziness or denial, they remain focused on what is happening outside their own small window.  There are still many families whose incomes haven’t been affected by the current deep recession, but alarming headlines belie the belief that all is well.  In fact, there are many who believe the worst is yet to come.  (Read this and this.)  The dollar is declining in value, the rate of unemployment hasn’t let up in months, a new rash of foreclosures is being forecast, and specters of terrorism, natural disasters, and civil unrest remain on the horizon.

In uncertain times, it’s vital that we look both ways to assess reality and respond accordingly.  My daughter didn’t mean any harm when she advised me to make that turn into oncoming traffic, but her limited perspective could have caused a tragic accident.  In order to know what actions to take, or not to take, we have no choice but to stay informed.
