  1. OK, Like I do every time I come across a contest among our survival/prepper community that runs a contest, I make a deal ….

If I win, I pass my prize onto the next person who makes a comment here!

  2. I have retweeted your message, I will work on a write up on my blog this week as well. Good luck to all that enter the contest.

  3. Commented on the 13 survival must have post. Love the new look btw.

  4. Reposted it over this way: http://www.wallsofthecity.net/2009/11/backpacks_t... . Hopefully that will drive some traffic over here :) .

  5. That looks like a great kit. The only thing I would add would be more emergency food!!

  6. I just found your blog through Adventures in Self Reliance. I am my wards food storage "specialist" and so I appreciate the wonderful collection of informtion you provide. I am getting a sun oven for x-mas and can't wait to try my bread in it. Thanks for that post!

  7. I love the look of your site. I was on this morning and thought I had the wrong blog… then I started nosing around and found some cools stuff. I loved the 13 things you need in an emergency and my favorite was a roll of quarters to put in a sock for a weapon. I have to say that since I read that and now, my 72 hour kits now have a roll of quarters… :-D ha ha… Anyway!! I would love to win that cool kit. Please count me in! Thanks!

  8. What a great giveaway! I found your blog via Angela’s Adventures in Self Reliance, so as a new reader I’m not sure how the old version was, but love this layout – especially your header.

I’m in the process of re-doing our 72-hour kits, created last year in central California. We now live in Okinawa so I need to revamp things to store better in this climate and reflect our emergency concerns here (typhoons vs wildfires, though the earthquake issue is the same).

Looking forward to browsing around your blog more. :-)

  9. I found your blog via Angela's Adventures in Self Reliance. Being the Self Reliance junkie I am, I'm always looking to connect with new people who are passionate about becoming more self reliant. I'll definitely be checking out your blog for preparedness ideas.

  10. I couldn't see where to send an email letting you know I've subscribed to your RSS feed, so I'm posting a comment here. Hope that's o.k.

  11. Great giveaway! I'm always looking to improve our preparedness. I'll be subscribing to your feed right now.

  12. Wow! I love your blog.

I went scouting around and found your tip on making a list of what each item in your kit could be used for. A few weeks ago, I did an emergency week with another blog. The first day we were supposed to take our 72hr kits and leave the house for 5 hrs. We were to only use what was in that bag for food, water, etc. I very smugly picked up my 72 hr kit and my son's 72 hr kit and off we went to my workplace (I clean some church buildings). It was down on the outskirts of Atlanta and there is a FIRE BAN down there. No problem! I have a soda can stove that I made and 2 bottles of fuel inside it. Only…..where WAS the fuel??? (Later it was found at home on the top shelf of the closet the 72 hr bags are kept in. What I FORGOT was that I had some alcohol that I use for deodorant in my kit and consequently, we couldn't heat much of the food we had. You see, HEET, denatured alcohol or regular alcohol all burn in these stoves. We were able to heat some water hot enough to make some instant potatoes by using our sunscreen for the car. Had we started earlier in the day, it would have worked very well, but the late sun didn't get the water hot enough to cook some microwave mac and cheese that we had with us.

And I JUST NOW realized that we didn't take our whole emergency stuff with us! We forgot to take the blue tub in the bottom of the closet as well as another couple of bags – like my ham radio bag with us!!!! The box had more water in it and some more supplies. I need to get the extra fuel into that and a note in my emergency book to that that box and also to take the extra bags with us if we're using the car to leave.

I have been making a notebook that I now have with my emergency kits with all my tips in it.

  13. I hope I don't have a bunch of the same comments. I'm having problems with my comment being accepted.

  14. Jennifer Ramirez says:

My husband introduced me to your blog because survival was never a topic that crossed my mind. He constantly stressed the importance of preparedness under many different circumstances and I just rolled my eyes at him thinking he was just bonkers. Well, I invested the time in reading several blog postings for him and I have to admit that I became intrigued and decided to become a subscriber to the blog. My husband and I now see eye to eye and have created a game plan for our growing family in the event of different occurrences.

I applied and received my firearms license and we will be going for safety lessons together as a team. We have ordered wheat in bulk, along with other types of storable foods. We started a garden this past summer. We both created an emergency binder. We purchased gold and silver because of the tanking dollar…The list goes on.

This blog made me a believer and for that I am very thankful. Oh…my husband is very thankful, too! We now see eye to eye and I no longer consider him a paranoid freak. :) We pray that nothing disastrous ever happens, but in the event that it does occur, we are prepared! Thank you, Survival Mom!

  15. I love the new look of your site! :) I would love to get this but not sure if I'm eligible since I'm in Australia – neat prize and site nonetheless. :)

  16. Love the concept of Citizens helping Citizens with practical information about emergency preparedness.

How many fire trucks are available to respond to your fire during a tornado? How many police can respond to your burglary when there's an active shooter at school? How many ambulances are available in your community when they are ecacuating the nursing home patients following a fire?

IN emergency management, we only ask for 72 hours of personal preparedness. Food, clothing, shelter are yours to own. After 72 hours, the situation has resolved itself or the Government is working hard to get you the essential services you require.

Check your home-owners or renter's insurance. These policies can be life-savers, especially to those who refuse to plan, prepare, practice, and promote for personal actions. Of course, for the money from insurance to be most effective, there needs to be a plan for how to spend it, ex. pre-planning evacuation for lodging for family and pets.

Thanks for the nice blog. I hope you have lots of readers. For years, your Federal government has had the "Are You Ready" program (http://www.fema.gov/areyouready) and (http://ready.gov). One more voice crying in the wilderness can't hurt. :)

Hope you can visit our blog once in a while to get some more ideas of how Citizens can and should prepare.

  17. I recently found you on Twitter and am reading through all your posts ~ we think so much alike! Loved your blog that was posted at Erich's about helping kids prepare ~ I won't double my comments here and waste bandwidth, though. Keep up the great work!

    • Hi there, Elizabeth! I wrote that article on Erich's blog straight from the heart. I so want my kids to have a carefree childhood and not be bogged down with adult worries. Thanks for finding my blog!

      Lisa
