SurvivalMom Book Review: The Boy’s Book of Outdoor Survival

Pity the children of a book-aholic mom.  Every birthday and Christmas my poor kids get books.  This year I’ve been checking out survival themed books for my son.

I came across this one, The Boy’s Book of Outdoor Survival and was pretty excited myself to learn the proper techniques for eating insects.  Did you know the wings, legs and antenna of grasshoppers should be removed and that all insects should be boiled before eating?   I know a lot of boys, and a few girls, who would find that information fascinating.

The Boy’s Book of Outdoor Survival contains simple directions and illustrations for, “101 courageous skills for exploring the dangerous wild.”  These courageous skills include making rain traps, stalking wild animals, making snares, signaling for help, and fending off a bear attack.  Each is described in easy-to-read language with colorful illustrations and diagrams.  I’d recommend this book for boys ages 9-14.

It there’s a tomboy in your life, just grab a Sharpie and scribble the word, “Tom”, directly above, “Boy’s” in the title.  There’s no need for boys to have all the fun!

  1. I still love reading about that kind of stuff, and I was never a tomboy. I think there is hope for humanity if we still have kids who would enjoy a book like this!

  3. I'm sorry, but despite the fact that I'm a 59 year old grandmother, this book sounds intriguing to me ~ for me… then I'll share it with the grand kids – they're too little to read yet. Course if there's lots of pictures I could read it to them. I think survival lite might be a great place to start, especially when ones considering eating bugs.

  4. thanks for this — great christmas idea for my kids too!

  5. Sounds like one we could all enjoy! Thanks for the review, I'm always looking for a good read for my kiddos.

    • To tell you the truth, Angela, I really bought that book for me! I'm the one who wanted to know how to set snares and make a solar still! My son hasn't shown any interest! LOL
