Nothing cheers the heart of a mom more than seeing her kids on their hands and knees scrubbing the kitchen floor and then moving on to scour the bathroom counters.  It puts a smile on my face every time!  I don’t worry at all that they’re working too hard, but I am concerned about the effects of harsh chemicals on their eyes and skin.

For that reason, I have stocked up on a plentiful supply of white and cider vinegars, bottles of lemon juice and scads of baking soda.  Not only are these kinder, more gentle cleaning products for our homes and the environment, they’re also a heckuva lot cheaper than commercial cleaning products.  For example, one tablespoon of bleach added to a gallon of water is an effective disinfectant.  If you haven’t yet made your own cleaning solutions, give it a try!  Here are some recipes to get you started.

  1. Great idea! If you can achieve the same results with less harmful products, I'm all for it — especially when there are children involved.

Do you rent them out?????? LOL

And you are so right about gentler cleaning solutions.

  3. I use vinegar for almost all my cleaning. I am chemically sensitive. There have been studies done and vinegar is almost as effective as bleach in disinfecting your home. :D

  4. I'm glad you told me that about vinegar as a disinfectant. It's amazing how much money the cleaning supply companies have gotten from us by convincing us that we need all those chemicals to make our homes clean.

  5. We grew up on using vinagar & baking soda as cleaners. On our own, we bought name brand cleaners, DUH!! About 10 yrs ago I switched back. Much cleaner and fresher scent than the store brands!
Amazing how smart our mothers were

    • That's the truth, and there are so many recipes out there for just about every cleaning use possible.
