Get Prepared at COSTCO!

survival mom button food1 Get Prepared at COSTCO!Suddenly, COSTCOs all over the country are beginning to stock buckets of hard white wheat and emergency foods.  Others carry 55 gallon water barrels and 72 Hour Kits.  Americans are picking up on the message that being prepared is a good idea, and retailers are figuring out there’s money to be made!

The COSTCO website is offering a year’s supply of emergency food for $799, sale ends October 18.  I have never tried this particular brand of dehydrated food, Shelf Reliance, so I can’t give an opinion of its’ flavor or quality, but you should be aware that it doesn’t include any freeze dried chicken or meat of any kind.  Instead, you get 15 cans of TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) in different flavors.   Some people love TVP, some hate it, and I sure wouldn’t pay $799 without knowing if my family would eat it or not.  You’ll find lots of other “emergency food” offerings at the website at decent prices.  The $799 is a good chunk of money, but if you figure the cost per serving, it’s only $1.41 per serving.

My own philosophy on these foods is that they are a great supplement to a total food storage plan.  The process of freeze drying retains the color, flavor and texture of fresh foods and most nutrients are retained. They’re very lightweight and easy to throw in the trunk of your car.  When you figure the cost per serving and the fact that they only require hot water to prepare, it makes them an essential part of emergency preparedness.  I have friends who incorporate these foods in their everyday cooking.

Check your local COSTCO, and ask if they carry long-term food storage products.  The advantage of buying from COSTCO is that it saves in shipping charges and they generally have good prices.  Once you know that you like a particular type of dehydrated or freeze dried food, Mountain House Beef Stew, for example, you can search for it online and possibly get a better price.

Thanks to PreparednessProfor the heads up that some COSTCOs are carrying Morning Moo products!
