Don’t freak out the kids!

Have you thought of ways to introduce your prepping efforts without freaking out your kids? I know mine pick up on every little emotional vibe. When we first began stocking up on food and supplies, putting together 72 hour kits, and storing water, they watched, wide-eyed and had plenty of questions.

How have you brought up the topic of preparedness with your kids? What suggestions do you have for parents who want their kids to be aware but not overwhelmed?

We've been prepping since our kids were babies. Guess they think it's normal–they probably don't realize that not every kid has an emergency pack under their bed . . . I think if it's done right and explained in a "we love you and want to protect you" way, and you do practice drills for fun, they don't get too concerned. The time we caused the most trauma with our kids was when we explained that if the house were on fire they were NOT to gather up all their favorite stuffed animals before getting out!

Thanks for this post. We're new preppers, thinking about moving to a farm with our 4, 2 and 6 month old girls. So far, we've been presenting it as an adventure about to happen if it is in His will. But I know we will eventually need to explain our survival rasoning to them. Few weeks ago we started reading the Little House series to our 4 year old, and she is enamoured. It will be so helpful for us to use Ma and Pa as examples as we prepare.

  Be sure to read my post on using the story of Joseph in the Bible as a preparedness lesson. That illustration really helped our kids understand the many reasons we prepare.

oh, my gosh! We are new to prepping, and we were buying stuff for our bug out bag, our four kids had ZERO questions. Which I thought was weird, but I knew they would come to me when they were ready.

I should've sat them down and talked to them a little. lol I *just* had this epiphany… when my four year old walked out of his room carrying a small back pack with socks in it "for his bug out bag". in the cutest little lisp. lol

anyway, they don't seem scared about it, but they think its a big adventure. thanks for this article! looking forward to reading the other ones you linked to!
