I agree that Game & Fish has an excellent program. The combination course in AZ covers basic wilderness survival, map reading, firearm safety, and, oh yeah, hunting. The RWVA's Project Appleseed teaches riflemanship, and the event I went to had a couple teens and even a couple kids around 10. If you want to learn how to shoot extremely tight groups, Appleseed's event is well worth the price of admission. See http://www.appleseedinfo.org/

If your school has a JROTC program, they may have a competitive team. My brother is on our school team, and just got his own rifle, he loves it. Also rifle/gun safety and marksmanship is part of JROTC curriculum. Everyone learns safety and how to shoot the weapons and then we all shoot at least once. At least that's how it is here.

Good practice, ultra cheap ammo, and an inexpensive gun. If kids don't like the loud noise of firearms, this is a good way to get them accustomed to handling one, learn some gun safety, and learn a new sport.

My kids thoroughly love target shooting. They both use .22 rifles. It's a fun outing to go to the shooting range, but I'm thinking they could use the air soft guns more often because they could shoot at things in the back yard. Like our dogs or the turtle... On second thought, maybe not! LOL

I think that it's great that you posted a blog about this. My husband, a former Marine, was trying to think of something fun for our daughter (age 3 at the time) to do with him. It was a rainy day so their usual hikes and wood gathering were out of the question. My husband broke out his air rifle BB gun and before I knew it, the two of them were happily shooting cans (that had to be recycled anyway) in the back yard. They were at it for hours and to this day my daughter loves the pastime......with both of us. It's great to see her learning a skill in a fun and safe way as well as bonding with her father.

How about a hunter education class. Every state has them and they do a little first aid, a little survival, a little orienteering, a little marksmanship and ethical hunting and safe firearm handling.
