INSTANT SURVIVAL TIP: A New Family Hobby: the Air Rifle

If your kids are already bored and you’d love to get them involved in a fun activity that will teach them practical, lifelong skills, consider air rifles.  Also called air guns, this inexpensive hobby teaches both adults and kids (boys and girls!) valuable target shooting skills.

The NRA has an excellent summary of the sport here.  Not only will this sport be fun for the whole family, but target shooting is an Olympic sport with many organizations offering college scholarships to sharpshooters!

air rifleBy the way, mom, if you’ve never fired a gun in your life, an air rifle is a good place to start.  If you have a daughter, it’s even more important for her to see that shooting isn’t just a guy thing.  Every woman should know the basics of firearm safety and shooting.  Still need a little convincing?  Check out Kellene Bishop’s blog, Women of Caliber or Cornered Cat.

To learn more about air rifle clubs and activities in your area, contact your local shooting range.  Your state’s Game & Fish Department may also have details.

  1. Louise Russell says:

How about a hunter education class. Every state has them and they do a little first aid, a little survival, a little orienteering, a little marksmanship and ethical hunting and safe firearm handling.

  2. I think that's a great idea! Game and Fish Departments are a great resource for that type of training. Thanks for visiting my blog!

  3. I think that it's great that you posted a blog about this. My husband, a former Marine, was trying to think of something fun for our daughter (age 3 at the time) to do with him. It was a rainy day so their usual hikes and wood gathering were out of the question. My husband broke out his air rifle BB gun and before I knew it, the two of them were happily shooting cans (that had to be recycled anyway) in the back yard. They were at it for hours and to this day my daughter loves the pastime……with both of us. It's great to see her learning a skill in a fun and safe way as well as bonding with her father.

  4. My kids thoroughly love target shooting. They both use .22 rifles. It's a fun outing to go to the shooting range, but I'm thinking they could use the air soft guns more often because they could shoot at things in the back yard. Like our dogs or the turtle… On second thought, maybe not! LOL

  5. great practice and could be used in a shtf event to hunt.

    • Good practice, ultra cheap ammo, and an inexpensive gun. If kids don't like the loud noise of firearms, this is a good way to get them accustomed to handling one, learn some gun safety, and learn a new sport.
