INSTANT SURVIVAL TIP: Survival-Savvy Kids Literature

Are your kids wondering why, all of a sudden, they’re seeing buckets of wheat around the house, and Mom is reading up on how to can meat?  Our kids are already hearing about job losses, families losing their homes, and it’s no wonder that many of them are pretty anxious about current events.

A great way to talk with them about your own plans for being prepared for hard times is to read together, books like Little House on the Prairie, Farmer Boy, Hatchet and My Side of the Mountain.

The Sign of the Beaver is one of my family’s favorites about a boy left on his own in Indian country.  Your kids will be impressed with his ingenuity.

These books, along with many others, illustrate people working to be self-sufficient and prepared for the future. Summertime is a great time to spend reading together.  Why not choose a book that illustrates your own values and goals and learn together?

  1. Don't forget Jack London's stories!

    • You're right! There are so many great adventures out there for kids to read about, and most adventures have self-reliance as a central theme.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog, FernWise!

  2. THANK YOU for these titles! My third grader is reading The Little House series in his Christian school this month, and the thers will be on the shelf after a trip to the library. I am blessed with two good readers (and two dead-eyes with their .22 LRs!)

May I suggest, THE DANGEROUS BOOK FOR BOYS (even for girls) as well.

***Too, wishing I had never read PATRIOTS***

    • I keep hearing that college scholarships for sharpshooters go unrewarded every year. A free education is just one of the reasons I want my kids to learn to shoot straight. :o )

  3. I remember hatchet! I read that in middle school.

My side of the mountain! I've been trying to remember the name of that book for a month! I read that book a LONG time ago. I loved it so much, and I read the sequels too. I have some really old copies that used to be my dad's – they are around here somewhere :/ I can't find them now. Thank you, for reminding me of the title so I can find another copy!
